Today’s blog covers a common Telegram issue that many users face. Sometimes, while messaging people on Telegram, your message does not get delivered, and instead, Telegram shows this error:
“Sorry, you can only send messages to mutual contacts at the moment.”
What does this error mean?
Why does Telegram show it?
And most importantly, how can you fix it?
You will find all the answers in this detailed guide. If you’re new here, make sure to subscribe to the channel and join my Telegram and WhatsApp channels for useful updates.
Why does Telegram show this Error?
Let’s understand the issue first.
When you try to message someone on Telegram whose number you haven’t saved, and he/she also haven’t saved your number, Telegram considers it a potential spam risk.
If you try to send multiple messages (3–5) to unknown users, Telegram automatically places a temporary limit on your account.
Due to this limit:
- You cannot send the first message to new people.
- You can only reply to people who message you first.
- You cannot start a fresh conversation with anyone who is not already in your contact list.
So basically, Telegram blocks you from messaging strangers to prevent spam.
Solution to Remove This Limit
Now let’s fix the issue.
When your message fails to deliver, you will see two options:
- OK
- Learn More
You must click on Learn More.
Step 1: Open Spam Info Bot
After clicking Learn More, Telegram will automatically open the Spam Info Bot.
This bot handles all spam-related issues and account limitations.
Step 2: Understand the Options
You will see three options:
- OK
- Why was I reported?
- I Was Wrong, Please Release Me Now
To remove the limit, click on:
“I Was Wrong, Please Release Me Now”
Once you select this option, Telegram receives your request to remove the limitation.
Send a Manual Message (If Needed)
If the bot asks you to send a message or if your report didn’t go through automatically, type and send this message:
“Hello, this happened by mistake. I will never do this again. Please release my account now. I will be very thankful to you.”
This message informs Telegram that you understand the mistake and won’t repeat it.
How Long Does Telegram Take to Remove the Limit?
After sending your request, Telegram displays a message showing when your account will be released.
For example:
“Your account will be automatically released on 14 April, 10:48 UTC.”
This means the restriction will be removed at that exact date and time (according to your timezone).
How to Check Your Account Status
Inside the Spam Info Bot, you can also check your account status.
If your account is free from restrictions, you will see:
“Good news! No limits are currently applied to your account. You are free as a bird.”
At this point, your problem is fully solved.
Just reply:
“Cool, thanks!”
And you’re done.
If the Issue Still Isn’t Fixed
If, after following all these steps, your limitation is still not removed, you can contact me directly.
My number is provided in the video description—send me a message and I will guide you further.
Conclusion
The “Sorry, you can only send messages to mutual contacts” error is standard on Telegram, especially if you message people you don’t know frequently.
Thankfully, the solution is simple:
- Open Spam Info Bot
- Request account release
- Send an apology message if needed
- Wait for your account to be unlocked
Once done, you can use Telegram normally again.
